Over the years, I’ve come to the realization that the more we open ourselves to the sublime emotions of joy and awe, the more we also open to the pains of life.
These are inextricably linked, like the two poles of a magnet.
It seems it’s the price us humans’ pay for our heightened sensitivity to discern and discriminate.
Along with this polarity comes another…
We have the remarkable faculty of envisioning and crafting a future. And this faculty is intrinsically linked to our remembering the past.
We, as humans, are great at reminiscing and forecasting; ruminating over the past and worrying about the future; learning from past experiences and planning so as to create our future…
But this proficiency of attending to past and future comes at the cost of living completely in the present.
That is where Awareness Through Movement® (ATM™) comes in, one of the most invaluable practices for achieving a fuller presence. Engaging in ATM lessons involves relinquishing goals and instead embracing the reality of what is.
ATM lessons guides us towards becoming more integrated and whole.
And as paradoxical as it sounds, we learn that ‘creating our future’ is enhanced by being more fully present now.
It is only in the now that we can actually attend to the emerging future.
These two facets, presence and integration, are inherently interdependent, and each one facilitates the other.
To inhabit the present moment with a sense of completeness, to feel entirely integrated with yourself, are remarkably beautiful experiences.
During an ATM lesson or any other activity explore this…
Sense all you are sensing without any words. Drop all the categories and labels and meaning you attach as you move, see, hear, feel, experience whatever you’re experiencing.
It’s like moving, seeing, hearing, feeling, experiencing again for the first time.
