Escaping our automated habits

Habits. Love 'em and hate 'em.

Habits are brilliant in that they make life easier.

Habits are also brutal because they become so automatic that:

  • we don't even know we're doing something that is harmful to ourselves (like compressing the bejeebies out of our poor low back joints every time we go to stand up or lift something)
  • we keep doing 'em even when we don't want to (like clenching our jaw to concentrate or holding our breath to do anything strenuous)

Escaping Our Automated Habits

"There are two ways of escaping our more or less automatized routines of thinking and behaving. The first . . . is to plunge into dreaming or dream-like states... The other way is also an escape-- from boredom, stagnation, intellectual predicaments, and emotional frustration-- but an escape in the opposite direction; it is signalled by the spontaneous flash of insight which shows a familiar situation or event in a new light, and elicits a new response to it. . . . it makes us understand what it is to be awake...
The first way of escape is a regression to earlier, more primitive levels of ideation, exemplified in the language of the dream; the second an ascent to a new, more complex level of mental evolution. Though seemingly opposed, the two processes will turn out to be intimately related." [emphasis mine]
~ A. Koestler

Coming upon this quote, I couldn't help thinking that this is one of the big reasons we do Awareness Through Movement® lessons.

ATM™ lessons help us do both the things pointed to by Koestler:

  • plunge into the "more primitive levels of ideation"
  • ascend to a more complex level of evolution

The first relates to the inherent intelligence we're all born with, given the shape of the homosapien sapien body on this particular planet with it's gravitational force etc.

Here I'm thinking of the word primitive in its ancient, original meaning, that is-- primary -- our primary intelligence.

And the second speaks to me not of ourselves as being complicated, but rather that we are complex-- meaning we are greater than the sum or our parts.

ATM lessons help us become more integrated wholes that can act in rich, creative, ever evolving ways.

ATM lessons help us break out of habits and help us understand what it is to be awake.

Tap into your innate, inherent, primary intelligence and find new responses to the stuff of everyday life. Make your life a little bit richer, because you're life is invaluable.

Cheers,

Gisele

A wonderful gift of Awareness Through Movement® lessons is the development of self-trust. Through ATM™ lessons, we learn and discover not so much by instruction, but through sensation — your own personal sensations. I know, I know... You can't have anything other than "your own personal sensations". And still, Reader, what I see over and over again is the tendency for Feldnekrais® students from all walks of life to look for external validation and/or demonstrate a lack of trust in their own...

The central question of a person's growth in wisdom is not how we avoid pain, injury, failure, or struggle but how we relate to discomfort. What do you do, Reader, when you feel pain or experience difficulty? Rather than seeing pain or difficulties as problems, we can recognize them as beacons alerting us that something important is happening that is worthy of our attention. Ordinarily, our habits wash over us, and we don't interrupt our patterns even a tiny bit. If we pay attention to what...

Seems there's already a theme running through my day today Reader. In fact, the theme was already emerging in the wee hours of the morning as I awoke and found myself ruminating on the nature of awareness. No doubt this emerged from reflections on my work with clients yesterday as well as my upcoming series' on transitions, and recalling Rumi's poem, Don't Go Back to Sleep. A little later... During a guided meditation, the few words spoken reminding that "trying", "leaning in", "seeking to...
